First Grade Curriculum

Teacher - Lauren May

Mrs. Lauren May has been with Crown of Life Lutheran School for two years.  She has over five years of experience teaching kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.  Mrs. May has her kindergarten to sixth grade teaching certificate and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Lenoir-Rhyne University.  She is an active member at Crown of Life Lutheran Church teaching the young adult small group and 5th/6th Grade Sunday School.

Mrs. May and her husband Kyle have a dog named Teddy. While not teaching she enjoys traveling, baking, and photography.

Topics Covered:

  • Reading is fostered daily through target reading instruction in comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary
  • Language Arts is applied using the basic rules of grammar, students craft strong sentences into cohesive paragraphs using daily writing.  Students also learn cursive handwriting
  • Math focuses on developing number sense for numbers 0-1000, demonstrate an understanding of place value, master basic addition and subtraction facts, learn to solve word problems with double-digit addition and subtraction, compare shapes, tell time, count money, and review basic fraction concepts
  • Science classes include studies in physical science, matter, life science (plants and animals), earth science (earth’s materials), and basic STEM skills taught through key vocabulary and hands on experiences
  • Social Studies includes citizenship, geography, government, history, and economics
  • Weekly Chapel
